Baroness Beeban Kidron, the filmmaker turned crossbench peer and founder of the 5Rights Foundation, has launched an urgent critique of the technology sector in her new book, Users. Kidron argues that the relationship between political leaders and Silicon Valley has become dangerously cozy, leaving children vulnerable to systemic online harms.
Kidron, who has campaigned for digital rights since 2012, is now pushing for aggressive legislative action. She specifically targets the use of AI to generate child sexual abuse material (CSAM), a crisis she describes as an “entirely preventable” failure of both corporate responsibility and government oversight.
The “Tobacco Moment” for Big Tech
Drawing parallels between social media platforms and the tobacco industry, Kidron argues that the business models of tech giants prioritize profit over the developmental needs of children. She contends that platforms have historically resisted regulation by claiming technical impossibility, only to implement safeguards when public pressure becomes unavoidable.
“Why would you put a toxic product into the hands of a young child?” Kidron asks. Her advocacy has gained traction as UK policymakers debate stricter measures, including potential social media bans for minors and the regulation of AI-driven chatbots. While she acknowledges that some government officials are becoming more sympathetic to her cause, she maintains that current legislative timelines are far too slow to protect the next generation.

Beyond legislative reform, Kidron advocates for a fundamental shift in how parents and society engage with technology. She encourages parents to limit device access, establish tech-free zones, and model responsible digital behavior to reclaim agency in an era of constant connectivity.
