BARTONVILLE (25News Now) – Police say once scammers get someone’s money, it can be very hard to get it back. The Village of Bartonville is helping older students learn how to avoid becoming victims, at it’s annual Safety for Seniors event Saturday.
The village has hosted this event for more than 20 years, as seniors are frequently targeted by fraud and scams.
A speaker from the Illinois Attorney General’s office reminded the crowd that even if they were raised to be polite, they don’t owe scammers a conversation. The advice: hang up.
Bartonville Police also attended, hoping seniors see them as a trusted resource if they have questions or suspect a scam.
“If they’re not sure if it’s a scam or not, they can come to the local police department and ask us about it. Let us listen to the voicemail, let us read the letter, whatever it may be to help them,” said Jeffrey Miller, Deputy Chief of Bartonville Police.
After the speeches, seniors walked through tables set up in the Limestone Community High School cafeteria. Organizers say they hoped the groups at Saturday’s event would help older residents stay informed, stay safe, and stay connected to the community.
