The Better Business Bureau is encouraging older adults and their families to take steps to protect themselves from scams during Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month.
The organization says people living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia may be more vulnerable to fraud because conditions affecting memory and decision-making can make it harder to recognize scams.
BBB officials say loneliness and social isolation can also increase risk, as scammers often target people seeking companionship or assistance.
The agency recommends that older adults avoid sharing personal information with strangers, be cautious of unsolicited phone calls and messages, and consult a trusted friend or family member if something seems suspicious.
Caregivers are encouraged to watch for warning signs such as unusual financial activity, frequent spam calls, or secrecy surrounding phone conversations.
The BBB also advises families to discuss common scams, screen unknown calls, and create a plan for handling suspicious messages.
