The members of the P-pop girl group BINI lodged a criminal complaint for cybercrime law violation before the prosecutor’s office of Santa Rosa, Laguna against the uploader of a spliced video where they tried Filipino food that “fueled online hate” against them.
The P-pop group’s complaint was made public in an Instagram post by the group’s lawyer, Joji Villanueva Alonso, and was reported by ABS-CBN News on Monday, August 18, wherein members Jhoanna, Aiah, Colet, Maloi, Gwen, Stacey, Mikha, and Sheena could be seen taking their oath before an officer of the court.
BINI members are contract artists of ABS-CBN.
Alonso opted not to state the name of the respondent, but mentioned in her post that the person is being charged for committing “unjust vexation” under Article 287 in relation to Section 4B and 6 of RA 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
The respondent is subjected to prision mayor, or imprisonment of six years and a day to 12 years.
BINI’s camp is also seeking damages amounting to P1 million for each member, or a total of P8 million for the octet.
“This emanated from the splicing of a 25-minute video of the BINI members, trying and rating Filipino street food. The uploaded spliced version was cut to 2-minutes and only showed only their negative reactions, completely changing the show’s narrative,” she said.

According to Alonso, the spliced video “fueled online hate and bashing” against the female octet, citing forms of “personal attacks, name-calling, and grave insults.”
“The malicious splicing of the video unjustly threw them in a bad light, causing irreparable emotional and mental distress,” she said.
“It must be remembered that freedom to post online is not an absolute right, and must be accompanied by truth, accountability and responsibility. Right to free speech ends when it starts to malign reputations or cause harm and damage upon others,” she continued.
BINI’s legal counsel said the girl group’s complaint is a way of responding to “digital form of abuse.”
“BINI is taking a strong stance against this digital form of abuse which is prevalent. Literally anyone may fall victim. In filing this case, BINI stands as a voice in fighting for all those who remain unheard,” Alonso said.
The female octet made headlines after participating in a People vs Food video where they tried and rated Filipino snacks. This led to them being subjected to multiple spliced videos on social media.
Earlier this month, Alonso hinted that the P-pop powerhouse will file a complaint against an unnamed individual. /edv
