A hacker this week took control of Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet’s X account, using it to promote what appears to be a cryptocurrency scam.
Two posts advertising a so-called “crypto-trading expert” appeared on Blanchet’s X page Tuesday and Wednesday, claiming that while the Bloc leader had been a former skeptic of cryptocurrency, the expert’s services had allowed him to earn thousands of dollars in a matter of days.
A Wednesday morning post incorrectly claimed that Blanchet had turned $800 into $20,000 in the space of two days. “Please note that this tweet has no intention to scam or mislead anyone,” the message reads.
Bloc spokesperson Joanie Riopel said in a statement that Blanchet is no crypto convert, confirming that his account had been hacked.
“We encourage the public not to click on any link from posts related to cryptocurrency or on any other new link until the Bloc Québécois says otherwise,” she said. “We’re counting on a quick collaboration from those in charge of X in order to fix the situation as soon as possible.”
The Canadian Bankers Association warns that common cryptocurrency scams can involve promises of “get rich quick” opportunities and scammers impersonating public figures.
