Turkish police have arrested 361 people in operations against cybercrime in the past two weeks, the country’s Interior Ministry reported on Monday.
The authorities’ actions were carried out in 39 counties and were related to the detection of crimes such as fraud for financial gain, illegal gambling, and online child pornography. They detained 669 people, with the court remanding 361 of them in custody, and 191 people were given other preventive measures.
According to the ministry, the perpetrators created websites through which they offered fictitious state housing, which was purportedly being built by the Housing Development Administration, and asked for money from citizens in the form of application fees, document processing fees or explaining that they are paying taxes in this way. Some of the scams were also related to collecting money through fictitious sales of white goods, shares, and offering investment opportunities.
Among those detained are those who illegally advertised gambling sites, mediated in making money transfers to illegal betting sites, as well as those who were involved in publishing child pornography.
The operation was carried out in coordination between the police, the Financial Crimes Investigation Board and the General Prosecutor’s Office.
