The Burnaby School District has confirmed that personal information belonging to some students, parents, guardians and staff was stolen in a ransomware attack discovered on September 21, 2026.
The district said an unauthorized third party accessed its systems and copied files containing personal information. Cybersecurity specialists were brought in to help investigate and contain the incident, and the matter was reported to the Burnaby RCMP and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner for B.C.
The potentially affected information includes students’ names, contact details, dates of birth, Personal Education Numbers, school and grade details, registration forms and supporting residency documents. Some kindergarten assessment notes, specialized learning support records and, in a smaller number of cases, bus routing information, intervention records and other student assessments may also have been compromised.
The district said the impact on students, parents and guardians was limited, and most of the sensitive information it holds about them remains secure. However, the investigation is ongoing.
The cyber incident initially affected some internal network services and phone lines. Phone service was restored across district schools and sites on September 28, while access to MyEducation, including the family portal, was restored on October 1. The district said student learning continued without disruption.
As a precaution, the district offered students access to TransUnion’s Fraud Alert Database on October 14. The service alerts participating creditors to potential fraud involving registered students, allowing them to take additional steps to verify identities before extending credit. Staff were also offered TransUnion services following a notice on October 1.
The district said it is continuing to investigate the attack, strengthen system security and keep affected individuals informed. It is also urging students, families and staff to remain alert to suspicious emails, text messages, phone calls and requests for personal information.
