Visakhapatnam: Cybercrime police have arrested two more individuals belonging to an international cybercrime network. The duo lured unemployed youth from Visakhapatnam promising high-paying data entry jobs abroad, only to traffic them to Chinese-operated cyber fraud companies in Southeast Asia.
Police identified the individuals as Naveen and Mohammed Altaf Ali, both from Visakhapatnam district. They functioned as agents for Chinese scammers located in Cambodia, Myanmar, Bangkok and Laos.
Authorities have issued look-out circulars (LOCs) for several additional suspects, including Akula Rajasekhar, also known as Roy, Nagendra, Pawan from Malkapuram, and Bongu Murali. They have evaded capture.
Naveen collaborated with Rajasekhar and Nagendra who operated for a Chinese outfit based in Cambodia. Their illegal operations involved utilising Facebook and other social media platforms to locate potential victims, enticing unemployed youth with false claims of high-paying data entry jobs, training them in fraudulent tactics once they arrived in Cambodia, and coercing them to defraud other Indians using scripts supplied by the Chinese firms.
Investigations commenced when two young people from Visakhapatnam returned from Cambodia after being duped and lodged complaints with the Cybercrime police. Following this, police took Naveen into custody.
Investigators detained Mohammed Altaf Ali in a similar separate case. He had worked for a Chinese cyber scam firm in Cambodia. After returning to India, he started operating as a recruiter.
Ali deceived 12 individuals into traveling to Cambodia. He collaborated with Pawan from Malkapuram, who remains in Cambodia and is part of the cybercrime network.
Police commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi indicated that following the arrests of agents, the Chinese organisations have modified their strategies. Rather than relying on direct agents, they are now using Indians, already trapped in these firms, to recruit new victims.
