ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Two Canadian men are accused of hacking into multiple computers in the United States, including in Western New York. Ryan Roach, of Saskatchewan, Canada, and Matthew Stubbings, of Ontario, Canada, are both charged with conspiracy to obtain information from a protected computer and to cause damage to a protected computer, obtaining information from a protected computer, and intentional damage to a protected computer. Federal prosecutors say between June 2016 and December 2019, Roach and Stubbings worked together to hack into computers, steal logins, and secretly mine cryptocurrency for financial gain. They say the two used virtual private servers in multiple countries registered under fake names. Prosecutors added that these servers transmitted malware and mining software to victim computers and stored stolen login credentials. Victims of the scheme included educational institutions in New York, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. Prosecutors say Roach and Stubbings damaged ten or more protected computers during a one-year period, causing a loss of at least $5,000. Roach was arraigned. Prosecutors say extradition proceedings continue in Canada for Stubbings. Both of them face a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
