Casablanca – Police in Casablanca arrested two men suspected of involvement in international telephone call hacking and an online fraud operation that impersonated Morocco’s National Road Safety Agency (NARSA).
The suspects, aged 23 and 28, were detained on Saturday by judicial police officers from Ain Sebaa-Hay Mohammadi security district.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the pair used electronic equipment to interfere with national telecommunications networks, disguising international calls as domestic ones to profit from differences in calling rates.
Investigators identified the two suspects and located them in Casablanca before carrying out the arrests.
Fake traffic fines and seized equipment
Authorities also suspect the two men of operating an online scam targeting motorists through fraudulent text messages.
The messages allegedly impersonated NARSA and informed recipients that they had committed traffic violations requiring payment.
Victims were directed to a counterfeit website designed to resemble NARSA’s official platform, where they were asked to settle the fabricated fines.
Searches conducted at the suspects’ residences in Casablanca and Settat led to the seizure of dozens of Moroccan SIM cards and prepaid recharge cards.
Officers also confiscated a laptop, internet connectivity and data-routing devices, and other electronic equipment suspected of being used in the operation.
The case follows previous warnings from NARSA about fraudulent messages that misuse its identity to demand payment for traffic violations.
In April, the agency warned motorists against suspicious links and websites imitating its official services. It urged the public not to share personal information, banking details or passwords through such platforms.
Both suspects remain in police custody while the National Judicial Police Brigade conducts further investigations under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office.
Investigators are working to determine whether the suspected operation has additional connections within Morocco or abroad.
