Rabat – The prosecutor general at the Casablanca Court of Appeal announced on Monday the opening of an investigation into claims made by Mohamed Ouzzine, secretary-general of the Popular Movement (MP), alleging attempts to hack his phone.
Ouzzine made his remarks last week on Sunday in Berrechid, near Casablanca.
In his remarks to the press, Ouzzine said there were attempts to hack phones and spy on them.
“This does not scare us because we are clean,” he said.
In response to the claims, the prosecutor ordered the opening of a judicial investigation to verify the allegations.
Ouzzine did not name a specific party during his statement, which comes at a critical time as Morocco is gearing up for its legislative elections on September 23.
Many political parties have released their electoral programs, with their campaigns largely focused on social issues, economic support, and public service reforms.
The Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) presented its program, pledging that it is focused on 20 commitments covering purchasing power, youth, public services, strategic security, and economic growth.
The party said its proposals aim to address rising living costs, difficulties accessing essential public services, youth unemployment, and concerns over rent-seeking and conflicts of interest.
Morocco’s National Rally of Independents (RNI) also presented its program, pledging measures that call for a shift aimed at strengthening empowerment and economic autonomy.
The two parties, which were both part of the government coalition in the Akhannouch-led cabinet, continue to promote their electoral programs amid a growing exchange of statements and pledges among political parties. The debate also includes Morocco’s current Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch and Fouzi Lekjaa, who recently joined PAM, with both criticizing each other’s statements as part of the electoral campaign.
The Justice and Development Party (PJD), meanwhile, has come out with fierce remarks from its leader Abdelilah Benkirane, who continues to criticize Akhannouch’s party, RNI, and PAM.
The PJD, which is an opposition party, said its program for this electoral campaign puts employment, especially among youth, at the center of its priorities.
Benkirane has also repeatedly accused Akhannouch of financial mismanagement and manipulation and called for him to be held accountable for the alleged misuse of public funds.
