CHELTENHAM, Pa. (WPVI) — The Cheltenham School Board met Tuesday night, 13 days after criminal charges were brought against four former Cheltenham High School football coaches and six players, and less than a week after the resignation of Superintendent Dr. Brian Scriven.
An interim superintendent has been appointed.
“This has been a tumultuous year for the district,” said Board President Leah Mulhearn.
The charges stem from two alleged assaults of a 15-year-old student in full view of teammates in an unsupervised locker room nearly a year ago, one of them captured on video.
The Montgomery County District Attorney has said that after the student told the coach, the coaches did not contact the victim’s mother or tell school administrators what happened.
“You ought to be ashamed of yourselves because I’m ashamed of every single one of you,” said one speaker during public comment.
Some parents say student safety is a problem that extends beyond the high school.
“Clearly what happened at the high school is not a one-off incident. This is occurring across schools and across grade levels,” said one mother.
“We are demanding a fundamental shift in our school district operations,” said another speaker.
Last spring, the varsity and junior varsity football seasons for this fall were cancelled amid the investigation.
The school board says they will now review safety policies and practices in all district schools and conduct top-to-bottom assessments of all athletic programs with a focus on safety and culture.
“All sports will be assessed. Football will not return until we have addressed this- no matter how long it takes,” said Mulhearn.
The board also announced that an outside attorney will conduct an independent review of district policies and procedures and report back with recommendations in 60 days.
