Carl Cacconie, a convicted child predator who faked his own death to avoid prison, was returned to El Dorado County. Cacconie was booked into the jail in Placerville on Thursday afternoon. He failed to appear at his sentencing hearing in August for child sex crimes against an 11-year-old girl. He faced up to 18 years in prison. A KCRA investigation revealed that El Dorado County Judge Michael Mclaughlin did not order Cacconie into custody in July when he was convicted. El Dorado County’s probation department did not pursue him when his ankle monitor disconnected in San Francisco the week before his sentence hearing. Cacconie’s wife claimed he left a suicide note. Cacconie spent nearly 10 months on the run until the FBI arrested him June 13 in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he was hiding at an Airbnb. A search warrant uncovered a gun, ammo and knives.
