MITCHELL, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – The City of Mitchell is investigating a potential cybersecurity incident that happened on Friday evening.

According to Mayor Jordan Hanson, the incident impacted a limited portion of the city’s network environment.

Out of precaution, the network was immediately shut down, and officials are working with a team of forensic experts so they can restore operations within a safe and remediated network environment.

“While these types of situations have become all-too-common nationwide, we recognize the significance of this event and have quickly taken the appropriate steps to address it. Understanding this, the City of Mitchell has systems in place to mitigate such events,” Hanson said in a statement.

Mayor Hanson also said that all critical and emergency services are unaffected and remain fully operational, and that there is no indication that the email environment has been affected.
