The Coimbatore city cybercrime police recovered a sum of ₹2 crore that 10 victims of online cheating lost in different cases in the recent past.
City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar on Thursday handed over the sum to the victims and lauded the cybercrime police for the swift action.
Cybercrime inspector P.A. Arun said the amount lost by victims of different online cheating cases was recovered with the support of courts and banks.
According to him, the cybercrime police trace the bank accounts used for fraudulent transactions and request the respective banks through appropriate courts to freeze the accounts. After verifying the transactions in question, the banks transfer the amount to the corresponding courts.
The recovered amount is either handed over to the victims through demand drafts or through online transactions, said Mr. Arun, adding that reporting online cheating to the police immediately after the occurrence was important in initiating the recovery procedure.
Government portal www.cybercrime.gov.in or 1930 toll free number can be used to report cyber financial fraud and freeze fraudulent transactions.
