WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — Members of the Woonsocket community have created a petition calling for lawmakers to implement increased child safety measures after a child died from being hit by a car.

On June 26, police said a 3-year-old boy died after he was hit by a car while riding his bike near Mason Street and Tenth Avenue.

The next day, community members created a petition to protect children in Woonsocket’s Fairmount Neighborhood and “prevent future tragedies.”

The petition calls for installing more crosswalks, implementing speed bumps, increasing the amount of traffic signs in school and play areas, and improving lighting along streets.

“These measures are not only reasonable but necessary to prevent further accidents, and they are essential to securing a safe environment for our children,” the petition said. “We urge our local lawmakers to prioritize these changes. The safety of our community, especially its children, must always come first.”

The petition has since received 368 signatures.
