Commvault has expanded data and AI security in Commvault Cloud following its acquisition of Satori. The move extends its controls from unstructured data into structured databases, including vector databases used in AI applications.
The update adds structured data discovery, classification and risk assessment, along with real-time access governance for structured databases. Together, these capabilities are intended to give security teams a single view of sensitive data, policy violations and exposure across production and backup environments.
Commvault’s existing data security posture management tools have focused on unstructured data. With this expansion, the platform now adds governance for structured data in cloud and hybrid environments, where organisations are increasingly storing information used by AI models and analytics tools.
Security concerns around that information are growing. Commvault cited research showing that 90% of organisations have exposed sensitive data that can be surfaced by AI, while another study found that 46% of breaches involve customer personally identifiable information and 40% involve employee personally identifiable information.
Broader controls
The platform now covers structured, semi-structured and unstructured data, with policy enforcement and visibility across hybrid and multi-cloud estates. New AI-enabled classification functions are designed to identify sensitive data automatically and flag environments where concentrations of sensitive information, excessive access rights or extended retention periods may increase risk.
The expansion also adds data access governance to monitor and control how structured data is accessed and used. This is intended to reduce the risk of data leakage, including through AI models or generative AI outputs.
Commvault is also linking the new controls to cyber resilience and recovery processes within Commvault Cloud. The aim is to help organisations identify and reduce data risk before an incident and improve recovery afterwards.
Yoav Cohen, Vice President of Product Management at Commvault and Co-founder of Satori, said the spread of data across modern IT estates had made oversight harder.
“As organizations expand into cloud and AI-driven environments, sensitive data is increasingly distributed across structured and unstructured systems,” Cohen said. “Without clear visibility and real-time access controls, that data can become overexposed and difficult to manage. By extending discovery and governance into structured data environments, we are helping organizations reduce unnecessary exposure and strengthen resilience across both live and backup data,” Cohen added.
AI risk
The announcement reflects a broader shift in security spending as companies try to govern the data feeding AI systems. Vector databases, often used to store embeddings and other data for AI applications, have become a growing concern because they can contain sensitive information that is difficult to track with older security tools built for conventional databases and file systems.
Commvault is positioning the Satori technology as a way to close that gap by bringing access controls and visibility to those environments. It expects that to support more focused remediation by helping teams prioritise issues based on impact.
Jennifer Glenn, Research Director, Data and Information Security at IDC, said the market was moving beyond traditional data security tools as AI adoption widened.
“As enterprises race to scale AI, data governance is emerging as a critical gap. Legacy data security tools weren’t built for environments where AI models can inadvertently expose sensitive information buried in vector databases and cloud data warehouses,” Glenn said. “Unifying the convergence of data security posture management and cyber resilience equips CISOs and CIOs with the tools they need to manage AI-driven risk across their expanding AI footprint,” Glenn added.
Availability
Data access governance for real-time control of structured data access is available now through single sign-on from Commvault Cloud. It is also being sold as an add-on across Commvault Cloud packages.
Structured data discovery and classification functions in Commvault Cloud are scheduled for general availability in late summer 2026. Those tools will extend Commvault’s existing data security posture management offering for unstructured data, which is already available in the Commvault Cloud Platinum package or as add-ons in other tiers.
