GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – A warning about a rise in romance scams.
The Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin says scammers are trying to trick people who are looking for love, trying to use you to launder money.
Technology is making these scams more sophisticated.
Scammers often move from dating apps. They’ll say they’re too busy to meet, prefer to talk over instant message or text, and often have a far-fetched story or sudden emergency. They may claim to be helping a loved one battling an illness, doing a business deal, or even representing a charity.
Consumer protection officials say don’t send or wire money or cryptocurrency and don’t give them numbers from gift cards.
Avoid talking about finances.
And try a reverse image search of their profile pictures.
If you’ve been a victim of a romance scam, report it. The Federal Trade Commission says nearly 70,000 people reported losing $1.3 billion to romance scams in 2022.
