TUCSON, Ariz. — A man who fled the country more than three decades ago after being convicted of sexually abusing children at a Tucson day care has been sentenced to nearly 250 years behind bars.
Daniel George Brewster received a 249-year prison sentence on July 17, according to the Pima County Attorney’s Office. The defendant, now in his late 60s, had been convicted in absentia in 1992 on 15 counts involving four separate child victims.

The charges included eight counts of sexual conduct with a minor, one count of attempted sexual conduct with a minor and six counts of child molestation, according to the Pima County Attorney’s Office. Brewster disappeared before the final day of his trial and remained a fugitive for more than 32 years.
Federal investigators tracked Brewster to Ukraine in 2025. Through coordination between the Pima County Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Marshals Service, he was brought back to Arizona on April 2.
The Pima County Attorney’s Office thanked Deputy County Attorney Tai Summers, Victim Advocate Michelle Sloan, Tucson Police Department Detective Dallas Wilson and the office’s Extradition Team for their work on the case. The office also recognized its federal partners at the U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Marshals Service for their years of dedication.
The lengthy manhunt involved tracking Brewster across multiple continents. Deputy U.S. Marshals pursued leads that took them to Mexico, Tanzania, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada before intelligence placed him in Ukraine in March 2025.
Brewster’s wife ran a day care facility in Tucson during the 1980s, where the abuse occurred. The case drew national attention when it was featured on America’s Most Wanted in 1995 and on In Pursuit with John Walsh in March 2020.

The U.S. Marshals Service took over the case in November 2015, launching a global search. Deputy U.S. Marshals traveled to Poland to take custody of Brewster from Ukrainian National Police, who transported him from Kyiv to the border.
The investigation included assistance from the U.S. State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service, the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs, the FBI Legal Attaché Kyiv and the Government of Ukraine.
