The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service (GPS) have intensified efforts to crack down on the increasing incidents of cybercrime in the country, targetting crime networks and human trafficking.
The two-state institutions, in a joint operation between May and July 2025, arrested a total of 65 individuals. Of these, 47 – representing 72 percent – were foreign nationals and the other 18 Ghanaians, who were apprehended across four major hotspots; namely Dodowa, Bortianor, Teshie-Nungua and Sogakope.
Acting Director General-CSA Divine Selase Agbeti highlighted that the strengthened partnership between the CSA and CID is focused on ensuring a safer digital environment through international collaboration, victim protection and prosecution of offenders.
He emphasised that his outfit, in collaboration with the CID and other national institutions, will continue to deploy all available resources and intelligence in combatting threats to public safety and Ghana’s digital ecosystem.
“The CSA and CID have significantly intensified intelligence-led operations targetting cybercrime-related activities across various parts of the country. These efforts reflect our shared commitment to ensuring a safer and secure digital environment for all residents and businesses in Ghana,” he said.
Director-General of the CID, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, delving into highlights of the operations mentioned that the first operation, which took place at Dodowa Sassabi in the Ubuntu Estate, led to the arrest of 25 foreign nationals.
40 laptops, 30 mobile phones and Starlink internet equipment were confiscated in that operation. Preliminary investigations showed that 23 of those arrested were victims of trafficking and have since been repatriated to their home countries.
On July 17, 2025, a second operation was executed at Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro, which resulted in the arrest of 16 foreign nationals. 22 laptops and 11 mobile phones were retrieved.
The authorities are working to repatriate 13 of these suspects to their countries of origin.
The third operation took place near Junction Mall in the Teshie-Nungua area on July 28, 2025 when 14 individuals were apprehended, comprising 13 foreign nationals and one Ghanaian.
Preliminary findings have also indicated that some suspects were victims of trafficking. Investigations are ongoing, with legal and diplomatic processes for repatriation and prosecution actively underway.
An earlier operation in Sogakope and Sege on May 29, 2025 led to the arrest of 10 suspects allegedly involved in online impersonation of high-level personalities, including members of parliament (MPs). The ringleader initially escaped but was subsequently apprehended in Sege on June 1, 2025.
COP Donkor also reiterated significant output of the collaborative effort and provided further updates on specific cases handled by the CID, reinforcing the GPS’s proactive role and commitment to the partnership.
