Cyber security Expert Raises Alarm Over Rising Cybercrime and AI-Driven Scams | #cybercrime | #infosec

Ghana continues to experience a rise in cybercrime, with fraud-related activities increasingly targeting individuals and businesses, particularly within the financial technology and mobile money sectors.

Cybersecurity expert David Gyedu has warned that fraudsters are taking advantage of emerging technologies and major public events to intensify their activities, calling for increased investment in cybersecurity and public education.

Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show on November 5, 2026, David Gyedu revealed that losses associated with cybercrime have risen significantly, increasing from GH¢22.5 million in 2025 to more than GH¢209.7 million within the first nine months of 2026.

He identified mobile money fraud as one of the most widespread forms of cybercrime, noting that many Ghanaians have either received fraudulent messages or encountered attempts to defraud them.

He further raised concerns about the growing use of artificial intelligence to create deepfake videos and clone voices, warning that the technology is making it increasingly difficult for ordinary users to distinguish between authentic and manipulated content.

The expert explained that some AI-generated videos may contain subtle facial movements and visual inconsistencies that can help viewers identify manipulated content. He also noted that AI voice-cloning technology can reproduce a person’s voice with a high level of accuracy using only a short voice sample.

To address the growing threat, he called for increased budgetary allocation to cybersecurity, stronger public awareness campaigns and adequate resources for security agencies.

He also stressed the need to expand cybersecurity infrastructure beyond Accra and train more professionals to strengthen the country’s response to emerging digital threats.

The expert urged the public to remain vigilant when engaging with online platforms, warning that cyber fraud continues to evolve alongside technological advancements.
