Cyberattack on Canvas impacts Central Florida schools | #hacker

ENFORCEMENT PRESENCE BACK AT THE SPEEDWAY. LOCAL SCHOOL LEADERS ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT JUST HOW MUCH DAMAGE WAS DONE AFTER HACKERS INFILTRATED A LEARNING SYSTEM USED BY MOST CAMPUSES. HERE. A GROUP CLAIMED IT BREACHED THE CAMPUS SYSTEM AND THREATENED TO LEAK THE DATA. WESH 2’S BOB HAZEN REPORTS MANY LOCAL DISTRICTS ARE KEEPING CAMPUS OFFLINE, EVEN THOUGH THE COMPANY SAYS THE PROBLEM IS FIXED. BECAUSE KIDS SHOWED UP AT SCHOOLS ACROSS CENTRAL FLORIDA. AFTER FINDING OUT THE SYSTEM THAT MOST OF THEM USED TO DO ASSIGNMENTS AND COMMUNICATE WITH TEACHERS GOT HACKED. I GOT THAT TEXT MESSAGE. SO I WAS LIKE, STAY OFF THE LAPTOP, DON’T COMPLETE YOUR ASSIGNMENTS. JUST STAY OFF. MONICA BONILLA’S SON GOES TO CONWAY MIDDLE IN ORLANDO AND IS ON CAMPUS EVERY DAY. COLLEGES AND SCHOOL DISTRICTS ALL OVER THE NATION USE THE PLATFORM, INCLUDING AN ORANGE, SEMINOLE, OSCEOLA AND BREVARD COUNTY. OFFICIALS SAY THE HACK HAPPENED ON MAY 2ND, BUT THE COMPANY THAT CREATED CAMPUS POSTED A STATEMENT SAYING, QUOTE, CANVAS IS FULLY BACK ONLINE AND AVAILABLE FOR USE, AND THEY FOUND NO EVIDENCE THAT THE THREAT ACTOR CURRENTLY HAS ACCESS TO THE PLATFORM. EVEN SO, MONICA WORRIES ABOUT WHAT THE HACKERS MIGHT HAVE TAKEN. I WORRY ABOUT EVERYTHING BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW, LIKE STUDENTS LOGIN NUMBERS, TEACHER’S NUMBERS, STUDENT ID NUMBERS, DATE OF BIRTH, SOCIAL SECURITY. ORANGE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS SAYS IT IS BLOCKING ACCESS TO CANVAS FROM ALL OF ITS SITES, AND IT’S GOING TO STAY THAT WAY UNTIL ITS OWN I.T. DEPARTMENT DETERMINES THAT CANNABIS IS STABLE AGAIN. WHEN A SYSTEM GETS BROKEN, THEY TRY TO STEAL ALL THE USERNAMES, ALL THE PASSWORDS, ALL THE OTHER PERSONAL INFORMATION THEY CAN. MIKE SABATO WITH CYBER COMPANY CMIT SOLUTIONS, SAYS THAT INFO IS VALUABLE TO HACKERS, EVEN THOUGH MOST OF WHAT IS ON CAMPUS IS ONLY RELATED TO CLASSWORK AND NOT FINANCIAL INFORMATION. THE INFO CAN BE USED TO TRY TO LOG INTO OTHER ACCOUNTS. IT’S NOT A SECRET THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE USE THE SAME PASSWORD EVERYWHERE. OFFICIALS SAY TESTING AND GRADES SHOULD NOT BE IMPACTED BECAUSE THEY ARE DONE ON OTHER SYSTEMS. SABATO SAYS NOW IS A GOOD TIME TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS AND ENABLE TWO FACTOR AUTHENTICATION. IF YOU DON’T WANT SOMEBODY PRETENDING TO BE YOU ON YOUR FACEBOOK TOMORRO
