Ex-Interpol Director Craig Jones on How Geopolitics Affects Global Cybercrime
Before the recent instabilities in the geopolitical landscape, countries were more closely aligned in their efforts to share threat intelligence with the objective of mitigating cross-border crime. But the current geopolitical situation has affected global cooperation.

Craig Jones, immediate past director cybercrime at Interpol, said geopolitical instability has pushed countries to shift their focus toward data sovereignty, scrutinizing data storage, access and regulations. “We’re seeing the regional bodies coming together stronger. We’re seeing individual countries now looking at the sovereignty of their datasets,” he said.
As countries become more protective of their digital assets, Interpol must navigate a complex landscape. Strict data governance rules ensure that member nations retain ownership and control over their data, but sanctions and proprietary tools further complicate information sharing, underscoring the fragility of international collaboration in a divided geopolitical climate.

As Interpol’s former cybercrime director from 2019 to 2024, he led global ops, built cyber resilience and advanced international cooperation to combat evolving digital threats. He previously held senior roles in U.K. law enforcement, focusing on cybercrime at local, regional and national levels.
