Cybersecurity, rising living costs and reforms to Tenaga Nasional Bhd’s (TNB) electricity billing system are expected to take centre stage in Parliament today as lawmakers prepare for another packed session.
According to the Order of Business, Chong Zhemin (PH-Kampar) is scheduled to press the Home Minister on the number of cybercrime cases reported throughout 2024, as well as the ministry’s initiatives to enhance digital security for Malaysians.
Larut MP Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin is expected to question the Finance Minister on the government’s approach to tackling the increasing cost of living, particularly in light of Malaysia’s national debt, now at RM1.5 trillion. He is also seeking clarification on how the country plans to navigate the World Bank’s projected 3.9% GDP growth for 2025 and the potential economic impact of reciprocal tariffs from the United States.
Meanwhile, Kota Bharu MP Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan will be turning the spotlight on the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, demanding explanations over the new structure of TNB’s electricity bills, which no longer apply tiered rates for domestic users. He will also ask whether the revamped system ensures cost fairness, promotes energy efficiency and maintains targeted subsidies for the B40 and M40 income groups.
In the tech space, Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen is set to raise concerns with the Communications Minister over the role of social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Xiaohongshu, in hosting scam and fraudulent investment advertisements, and whether these platforms bear any responsibility towards affected victims.
Following the question-and-answer session, the Dewan Rakyat will move to the first reading of the Offenders Compulsory Attendance (Amendment) Bill 2025 and the Fisheries (Amendment) Bill 2025.
The ongoing Second Meeting of the Fourth Session of the 15th Parliament is scheduled to run for 24 days. Among the major items on the agenda is the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan, set for July 31.
