In a major relief to victims of cyber fraud, the City Police Commissionerate has returned over ₹6.02 crore to 310 victims through the ‘Cybercrime Refund Mela 3.0.’

The refund cheques were distributed by Home Minister V Anitha during the mela held in Visakhapatnam.

Addressing the gathering, Ms. Anitha said that cybercrimes had increased significantly after the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting the NDA government to intensify its focus on tackling such offences. The government is taking strict action against cybercriminals and Cyber Crime Police Stations were being strengthened by equipping them with advanced technology. She shared that such police stations were being established in every district across the State.

She highlighted that even the educated and tech-savvy individuals were increasingly falling prey to online frauds. “The recovery of nearly ₹6 crore and its return to 310 victims reflected the government’s commitment to protecting citizens from cyber fraud,” she said.

Commissioner of Police, Shankabrata Bagchi said that the cyber crime police coordinated with banks, payment gateways, financial institutions and the judiciary to freeze fraudulent transactions and recover the defrauded amounts. He said: “In the last three cyber crime melas, the city police had refunded about ₹28.49 crore to 1,550 victims.”
