Hassan Sunny is arguably Singapore’s greatest ever goalkeeper. But it is in China where his football prowess catapulted him into a bonafide celebrity.

The 42-year-old, alongside his eldest daughter Sarah Arissa, recently appeared on an episode of 8days chat show ‘DNA’ where, among other things, he looked back at the match where he made 11 crucial saves in Singapore’s 3-1 defeat against Thailand during a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

The heroic performance aided China’s progression and saw him become an overnight sensation in the country with Chinese fans even flooding his nasi padang shop, Dapur Hassan, in Tampines.

“My QR code from my shop was getting multiple transactions, so I called my wife. The next morning, she was at the shop at 7am, and [she told me] there were 50 Chinese people lining up right in front of her while she was cutting vegetables,” Hassan said.

Hassan also revealed to 8 Days that his family were mobbed by fans when they visited Shanghai courtesy of sponsors CapitaLand. “It was so fun, we even had security,” Hassan’s daughter Sarah said during the ‘DNA’ interview.

The VIP treatment continued when Sarah visited a Pop Mart store where she came away with about $800 worth of products. “[They told me to] just take anything I wanted, so I took a whole bag and I filled it with PopMart,” she said.
