ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Newton County Schools’ digital network was recently affected by a “cybersecurity incident,” the district said on Monday.
The school system is still trying to determine the scope and impact of the incident.
“Upon discovery, we immediately took steps to secure our systems, including taking affected systems offline, and engaged cybersecurity specialists to assist with the investigation and recovery efforts,” the school system said.
It’s unclear what sensitive information, if any, was put at risk.
In a video statement, Superintendent Dr. Duke Bradley III said the FBI, the Georgia Department of Education, legal counsel and other experts are helping with the investigation.
“We recognize that this situation raises questions, and we are committed to communicating openly as information is confirmed,” he said. “At this stage, our focus is on conducting an investigation, restoring our systems and ensuring that the essential work of our school district continues with as little disruption as possible.”
