WEST LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ala. (WAFF) – West Lawrence Water is working with law enforcement and cybersecurity experts after discovering a cybersecurity incident and a physical breach at one of its facilities on Thursday.
Utility officials confirmed the incidents but stated that water distribution operations have continued without interruption.
Officials say there’s currently no indication that water quality or the safety of the public water supply has been compromised.
Upon detecting the issues, the utility activated its response plan, isolated affected systems, and secured the impacted facility.
“The safety and reliability of the water we deliver to our community remains our top priority,” Interim General Manager Elizabeth Spruell said. “We are taking this incident extremely seriously, working around the clock with cybersecurity experts and law enforcement to fully understand what happened.”
Federal, state, and local authorities are investigating the scope and origin of the breaches. West Lawrence Water said any customers or employees whose personal information may have been affected will be notified directly.
Customers are encouraged to remain vigilant against potential phishing attempts or suspicious communications claiming to be from the utility.
