SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – As people rely more on smartphones and artificial intelligence, experts say cybersecurity threats are becoming harder to spot.
Jeff Kew, Verizon’s Great Lakes communications manager, said the company’s latest data breach report found the “human element” was involved in about 60% of data breaches. He said phishing messages and other social engineering attempts are also becoming more convincing.
Kew said the report found a 40% increase in people clicking on malicious links and phishing attempts on their phones compared with computers.
Create a verification phrase with family
Kew recommended that families create a shared password or verification phrase to help confirm someone’s identity if they receive an unexpected phone call or email.
He also warned that scammers may use artificial intelligence to imitate a person’s voice. People should be cautious about unexpected requests for information or action, even if a message appears to come from someone they know.
Keep sensitive information out of AI tools
Kew said the growing use of AI at work can create security risks when employees enter personal or proprietary information into AI tools.
“Be very careful when you’re using AI and inputting information in that you’re not putting proprietary information or you’re not putting personal information in there,” he said.
Kew said businesses should assess how employees access information and make sure appropriate security measures are in place. He also recommended that people keep software up to date, though he said the time to fix software vulnerabilities has increased.
Kew said Verizon offers threat-assessment resources to its business customers. He also pointed to AI Skills for America, a free educational program open to the public.
