DAVIESS CO., Ky. (WFIE) – The Daviess County emergency preparedness working committee heard from the Kentucky National Guard about cybersecurity at a meeting Thursday.
A commissioner invited Capt. Kelli Ryan with the Kentucky National Guard as a guest speaker. Ryan is with the Cyber Resilience Initiative, a team bringing awareness to counties about the importance of cybersecurity.
Ryan said the Kentucky National Guard decided that cyber was going to be one of its priorities.
The initiative is designed to improve cybersecurity in counties across the commonwealth.
“The National Guard is not just here with tanks and guns and stuff, we’re here with laptops and trying to help people bolster their network and just make Kentucky more cyber secure in general,” Ryan said.
Ryan said in other counties the initiative has worked with, they have helped improve the security of dispatch centers, hospitals, sheriff’s offices and county IT departments.
“Mostly what we’re looking to do is just awareness. A lot of people, cyber is new, or for a lot of counties they’re very, very small team of people. So we just wanna try and partner with people,” Ryan said.
Ryan said the initiative’s reach goes beyond the county.
“It’s not really just making the county’s IT network more secure but if there were ever to be a leak at a county, like that affects people’s pay, that affects livelihoods it affects people’s data and memories,” Ryan said.
Ryan said the Kentucky National Guard won’t be coming in yet, but remains hopeful that the conversation will lead to meaningful relationships.
