A sweeping investigation into a series of hoax bomb threat emails sent across 12 Indian states has uncovered a shocking case of cybercrime rooted in obsession and revenge. The Ahmedabad Cyber Crime police have arrested Rene Joshilda, a robotics engineer and senior consultant at Deloitte in Chennai, for orchestrating the threats using advanced digital tools to conceal her identity.
According to police, Joshilda’s actions were driven by unrequited love and a desire for vengeance. Obsessed with a man named Divij Prabhakar, she reportedly wanted to marry him. When Prabhakar wed another woman in February 2025, Joshilda allegedly attempted to frame him by launching a campaign of digital terror in his name.
Between May and June 2025, Joshilda sent at least 21 fake bomb threat emails, including 13 directed at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. Other targets included Geneva Liberal School, Divya Jyoti School, BJ Medical College, and high-profile public locations in Maharashtra, Delhi, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, Bihar, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana.
Using her technical prowess, she created multiple fake email accounts, some in Prabhakar’s name, and leveraged VPNs, virtual numbers, and the dark web to mask her trail. The threats were often timed around religious events or VIP visits, sparking nationwide panic and intense mobilization of security forces.
In a shocking escalation, Joshilda claimed responsibility for the Air India AI-171 crash, stating in one of her emails that the pilots were “working for her.” This false claim linked her threats to the fatal tragedy in Ahmedabad, heightening concerns during the investigation.
The case broke open after a June 3 threat to a school led investigators to trace digital fingerprints to Chennai. Despite her sophisticated efforts to stay hidden, a minor technical slip exposed her location. Police arrested Joshilda and recovered substantial digital and physical evidence linking her to the threats.
Authorities have called it one of the most complex and psychologically driven cybercrime cases in recent years, highlighting the growing misuse of tech in personal vendettas.
