A Non-Governmental Organisation, Search for Common Ground has identified drug abuse and cybercrime as major issues fueling conflict in Delta State.
The group disclosed this on Tuesday during a road show organized by the Search for Common Ground media Delta State in collaboration with National Drugs Law Enforcement agency to mark 2025 anti-drug day in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
The media coordinator of the group, Mr Sunny Dada stated that the road show sensitisation walk on drug abuse and cybercrime was apt especially at this point in time that has witnessed alarming increase in drugs and cybercrime.
He said, “We are under the project called community centered approach to transforming criminality and violence in the Niger Delta.
“The name of this particular activity is common ground journalism initiative. It is an initiative done by journalists who have gone through conflict sensitive training, under the project and the training was done by Search for Common Ground.
“So, this activity was their own initiative in recognition of the conflict drivers we have in the state, drug abuse and cybercrime you will agree with me are key conflict drivers in the state.
“Drug abuse often time led young people into crime, cybercrime is a big challenge, so the journalists felt the need to draw awareness against drug abuse and cybercrime.
“Luckily for us we have other organizations that collaborate with us like the NDLEA, Police, Oshimili Youths and others.
“We saw the youth of Oshimili South, as matter of fact, the campaign is targeted at them, so it is a major plus for us and we believe that the sensitization/ awareness stimulating behavioral change”
Also speaking, the Deputy State Commandant, Operations and Training, Mr Victor Isibor lamented the rate of female involvement in drugs intake.
He said the road walk was to create awareness of danger that follows drug abuse in our society.
“Today, is set aside to commemorate anti-drug day which June 26, where we use the period to sensitize the youths on the danger of drugs abuse.The women involving in drugs abuse is becoming more worrisome. The ratio of men to women is 1-4, this is a disturbing ratio and we need to address the menace”
Isibor said drug abuse has led to other crimes in the society.
