Denuvo GmbH has formally filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California against an anonymous hacker known by the online pseudonym voices38The plaintiff accuses the defendant of systematically violating the provisions of the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) regarding the prohibition on circumventing technical copyright protection measures. The lawsuit was filed following a large-scale hack of the Anti-Tamper system: a hacker used a classic method of directly patching internal DRM security checks without having to disable system virtualization functions. Denuvo’s lawsuit emphasizes that the company itself does not own the copyright to the hacked video games, so the lawsuit is not based on direct piracy of someone else’s intellectual property, but on direct commercial damage to the security system developer’s business. The Austrian company’s clients include the world’s largest publishers, including Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Capcom, Warner Bros. Games, and Sony, whose releases were neutralized. The official list of compromised titles includes both past projects like FIFA 20 and PES 2020 and modern big-budget blockbusters, including Hogwarts Legacy, Black Myth: Wukong, Dead Space Remastered, Resident Evil Requiem and Doom: The Dark Ages.
Since the hacker’s real identity remains unknown, court documents list him as an unknown individual or entity, along with ten unnamed accomplices, under the designation “Doe.” To de-anonymize the defendant, Denuvo’s lawyers identified a Reddit account, a Discord handle, and seven associated Steam profiles used to purchase protected, licensed copies of games prior to the reverse engineering. As part of the preliminary proceedings, the company plans to subpoena Valve, Reddit, and Discord, demanding the hacker disclose payment details and network data, and is seeking an injunction preventing the breach of the security system in all existing and future projects.
