GALLATIN, Tenn. (WSMV) – A Portland man received the longest prison sentence Sumner County has seen for abuse-related crimes, according to a lead prosecutor.
District Attorney General Thomas Dean announced Friday that Walter Lucian Lewis, 32, was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, plus 60 years in prison.
Detectives believe Lewis molested and abused at least four young girls, including a 5-year-old, in two different Tennessee counties since 2022.
“Walter Lewis’s depraved actions have negatively impacted the lives of multiple children and their families. Our community is now safer because he will spend the rest of his life behind bars,” Dean wrote. “This sentence should serve as a warning to anyone who may wish to follow in Mr. Lewis’ footsteps: This behavior will not be tolerated in Sumner County, and you will be held accountable for your crimes.”
Years of abuse
An investigation revealed to detectives that Lewis first began preying on children in Sumner County in 2022, according to the district attorney general.
But authorities first learned of his crimes more recently, after two girls told an adult that Lewis had touched them inappropriately. They also reported seeing the Portland man sexually abuse a third child, “telling them to keep what he was doing a secret.”
Interviews at Ashley’s Place, a Sumner County child advocacy agency, revealed the abuse happened for several months in 2024 and 2025, the DA said.
1-year-old baby taken hostage during arrest
When the case lead, Detective Eric Poulin, confronted Lewis about the allegations, the scene quickly escalated.
“After Det. Poulin interviewed Lewis about the allegations, Lewis began making suicidal threats, eventually barricading himself inside a bathroom while holding a 1-year-old baby hostage,” Dean wrote on Facebook.
Deputies ultimately accessed the bathroom, and upon their arrival, Lewis grabbed a knife and “stabbed himself in the neck in an apparent attempt” to take his own life.
But the sheriff’s team was able to “subdue” Lewis and arrest him. The baby was also rescued after being found in the bathtub unharmed.
Historic prison sentence for Sumner County
The 32-year-old was later convicted of continuous sexual abuse of a child, three counts of aggravated rape of a child, aggravated sexual battery, especially aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, sexual exploitation of a minor, especially aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated assault on a first responder.
The district attorney general described Lewis’s sentence as “the longest ever imposed in a child sexual abuse case in Sumner County history.” He said it also marks Sumner County’s first sentence without the possibility of parole “since the Tennessee Legislature mandated that such a sentence be imposed for those found guilty of aggravated rape of a child.”
The prosecutor praised the children’s bravery in this case and thanked Assistant District Attorney General Nathan Nichols for his “tireless pursuit of justice.”
“This conviction would not have been possible without the bravery of these survivors, excellent investigative work of the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office, and valuable assistance provided by Ashley’s Place and OurKids Clinic, who each helped to gather crucial evidence in this case,” the press release said.
