NESBIT, Miss. (WMC) – DeSoto County has launched a new initiative to support the growing older adult population.
On Wednesday, the county hosted the “Safety in the Numbers: Senior Safety Bingo Bash” at the Agri-Education Center in Nesbit.
County leaders say local data between January 2024 and January 2025 showed older adults in the county frequently fell victim to scams, theft, vandalism, identity-related offenses, and vulnerable-adult abuse.
The free event featured safety demonstrations, scam-prevention guidance and community resources
“We noticed there was a huge gap in our seniors knowing particular things in regards to technology, and some of the things we were seeing trending in the sheriff’s department,” said Hannah Owenga, grant administrator for DeSoto County. “This is a partnership with the sheriff’s department. We wanted to make sure to bring that information directly to the public.“
County leaders say they hope to bring the event back on an annual basis.
