PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Students at Dobbins Career and Technical Education High School were still talking Thursday about a fight that occurred after school the previous day, as police and school safety officers maintained an increased presence on campus.
Video of the fight has been circulating on social media, drawing widespread attention and prompting additional safety measures.
“They was like fighting and all that,” said Syncere Bellinger, an 11th grader.
Another student, Daisy Marie, a 12th grader, said she witnessed the incident.
“I seen it. I was like, ‘Oh yeah, I ain’t got time for all the fights because I ain’t trying to get into that,'” she said.
According to surveillance video, a group of students ran across 22nd Street and West Lehigh Avenue as they followed two girls who were fighting after school.
Police and school officers were at the school Thursday to help ensure student safety. An additional school safety patrol was also assigned to the area after dismissal.
“It just breaks my heart that things have transpired that are transpiring regarding kids fighting and things of that sort,” said Lori Martin, a Dobbins alumna.
Dobbins is part of the School District of Philadelphia’s Safe Path program, which places security personnel and trained adults at schools during arrival and dismissal times.
In a letter to parents about the incident, Dobbins’ principal said the school takes proactive safety measures, including four Safe Path staff members and six school safety officers, along with other staff members.
Principal Shervon Thompson reiterated that commitment in a statement, writing, “Student and staff safety is our highest priority every single day at Dobbins High School.”
Bellinger said the incident does not leave a positive impression of the school.
“And it’s not cool because now y’all are making Dobbins look bad,” he said.
Martin, who volunteers at the school, said the fight should not define Dobbins.
“We want people to know that, that it is a great school. It still is a good school, and a lot of great and good things are going on,” she said.
Police were called to the scene Wednesday primarily for crowd control. One person was detained, but no charges were filed.
