Chennai: A Coimbatore-based doctor, who fell victim to a digital arrest scam and lost 2.9 crore to cybercriminals, was rescued by the cybercrime wing officials who visited his house and found that the doctor had isolated himself as ‘instructed’ by the scamsters. The doctor, in his fifties, told police that on June 27, he received a phone call from a person saying he was from the Mumbai cybercrime police station. The caller accused the doctor of involvement in a cyber fraud case and told him to transfer 2.9 crore to avoid arrest. The fraudsters continued to demand more money until the cybercrime wing intervened. The state cyber command centre identified the victim during a preemptive intelligence operation.Police said a cyber intelligence team identified two ongoing digital arrest scams — one in Tamil Nadu and another in Jharkhand. While the Jharkhand police was alerted about the case in their jurisdiction, a team from the Tamil Nadu cybercrime police was dispatched to the doctor’s residence to intervene. However, officers found that the doctor refused to open the door, believing that he was under digital arrest. After nearly two hours of persuasion, the victim realised he had been defrauded. A formal complaint was registered, and an investigation is underway.Officials said the victim’s banking channels were secured in time, said an officer. Victims of similar scams are advised to call the cyber crime helpline 1930 or file complaints at www.cybercrime.gov.in.
