DoorDash theft: Thousands of dollars stolen from Moretti’s Restaurants chain after food delivery account hacked, owners say | #hacker

ROSEMONT, Ill. (WLS) — The owners of a chain of suburban restaurants say hackers stole tens of thousands of dollars by hacking into their accounts.

They are among the latest victims of hackers who got into food delivery accounts.

Moretti’s Restaurants do a big chunk of business with food delivery companies like DoorDash. But when someone apparently hacked into the restaurant DoorDash account, they were able to steal tens of thousands of dollars of proceeds.

There was a busy lunch rush Thursday inside the dining room at Moretti’s in Rosemont, but the delivery business is also very busy. Drivers were picking up orders to deliver to customers around the area who choose not to eat inside.

Moretti’s Ristorante & Pizzeria does a significant portion of their business through delivery, so it was a big hit earlier this year when someone was able to hack into the company’s DoorDash bank account and change all the information.

They want to sweep this under the rug rather than acknowledge they have security issues

Dean Hoffmann, Moretti’s owner

“I was taken aback, surprised,” owner Dean Hoffmann said. “I logged into our account and all our banking and ownership information was changed.”

But it gets worse. The hackers were able to divert the money to their own bank account.

Hoffman says he called DoorDash numerous times, and they assured him everything was fine. But it happened again, several times. He said a total of more than $35,000 was stolen.

“So we were taking orders and business as usual and the payouts we were supposed to be receiving were going to a random bank account,” Hoffman said.

It’s a scam that is becoming more common. Thieves hacked into the account of Paradiso, a Northern California Italian restaurant, stealing thousands.

In Chicago, the ABC7 I-Team spoke with the owners of two restaurants who were victims of hackers getting into their Uber Eats accounts, stealing thousands.

A DoorDash spokesperson said in a statement, “We reviewed Moretti’s account and confirmed the fraudulent activity was the result of a fraudster targeting the merchant’s email credentials, not a breach or failure of DoorDash’s systems.”

The Moretti’s owner says DoorDash has reimbursed about $5,000 of the $35,000 stolen.

“They want to sweep this under the rug rather than acknowledge they have security issues,” Hoffmann said.

Moretti’s is back using DoorDash again, but they say they check the bank accounts closely every day.
