GREENVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – About 50 people gathered at Five Points Plaza to pray for teenagers, police officers, and the Greenville community following multiple fights downtown last weekend.
Greenville City Councilwoman Portia Willis organized the prayer gathering. State lawmakers and city council members from other Eastern Carolina cities attended.
The gathering focused on prayers for teenagers, officers, and the community as a whole. It came after several fights last Saturday downtown involving teens that stemmed from a social media post calling for teenagers to gather at Sup Dogs.
Christiana Moore-Jones, from Koinonia Christian Center Church, led one of the prayers.
“We’re coming in to allow God to just fall fresh, and we’re taking the city by force in the mighty name of Jesus with collective prayer,” Moore-Jones said.
Police said six people were arrested last Saturday downtown, two of them teenagers.
Another post on social media is calling for another teen takeover this weekend, leading Mayor P.J. Connelly to declare a downtown curfew for teens.
Those at the prayer gathering are hoping that teenagers do not respond to the call to repeat what happened last Saturday.
