A Dubai criminal court has acquitted a 43-year-old American shareholder and consultant of all cybercrime and embezzlement charges involving more than $6 million, citing insufficient evidence and the presence of reasonable doubt.
The court also dismissed a related civil claim for compensation and ordered the complainants to shoulder legal costs, including lawyers’ fees.
Prosecutors had accused the defendant of unauthorised access to company systems, manipulation of digital platforms, and breach of trust under UAE cybercrime and penal laws.
The case revolved around allegations that he altered operating links to gain control of corporate digital assets, including social media accounts on X (formerly Twitter), Telegram, and Instagram, as well as cryptocurrency tracking platform CoinMarketCap.
He was also accused of misappropriating $6,098,400 in investor funds by allegedly diverting the money into unauthorised accounts after taking control of company systems.
The defence, led by lawyer Mohammad Abdullah Al Redha, denied all allegations and presented an independent technical report that contradicted the prosecution’s findings, casting doubt on the reliability of the digital evidence.
Lawyers argued that the accused held multiple roles — shareholder, employee, and consultant — in Inter Data Network Inc. and Cerbellum Network Inc., giving him legitimate access to company systems and data.
They also said the case stemmed from commercial disputes and overseas legal proceedings, rather than criminal intent.
The defence highlighted the absence of financial records, bank statements, or any traceable trail linking the accused to the alleged misappropriation, as well as the lack of complaints from investors or customers.
In its ruling, the court found that the prosecution failed to prove unlawful manipulation or personal gain, noting that the defendant’s access to systems was authorized.
Citing what it described as “thick shadows of doubt,” the court ruled in favor of the accused, acquitted him of all charges, dismissed the civil case, and ordered the claimants to cover legal expenses.
