DURANT, Okla. (KXII) – The City of Durant is updating residents after it was targeted by a ransomware attack in June that impacted some of its services.
In a Facebook post, the city said that on June 1, hackers accessed a server that had information including names, addresses, social security numbers and financial information from people who had interacted with the city.
The city said that city staff immediately began to work with law enforcement and cybersecurity experts to take care of the problem. It then hired outside forensic and IT specialists to investigate the attack with city personnel.
The investigation is still ongoing, but it revealed that the attacker may have had access to the city server and database.
The city is encouraging residents to watch their accounts, report suspicious activity and consider putting a fraud alert on their credit report.
