Operation Eastwood marked a significant step in the fight against cybercrime, with Ukrainian police actively participating in dismantling a pro-Russian cybercriminal network. This concerns the NoName057(16) group, known for its ideological support of the Russian Federation and for carrying out DDoS attacks on various online services. One such attack occurred during the NATO summit in The Hague.
This information was published on July 21 on the website of the National Police of Ukraine.
“From July 14 to 17, as part of the international Europol and Eurojust operation Eastwood, law enforcement agencies from several countries conducted a coordinated operation against the pro-Russian cybercriminal network NoName057(16)”
Law enforcement officers from Ukraine, the Czech Republic, France, Finland, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the USA, as well as Belgium, Canada, Estonia, Denmark, Latvia, and Romania took part in this operation.
On the Ukrainian side, operatives from the Cyber Police Department and staff from the Department of International Police Cooperation of the National Police were involved in the operation.
“The NoName057(16) group is an ideologically motivated cybercriminal organization that openly expresses support for the Russian Federation and conducts DDoS attacks on online services. The group has created its own botnet consisting of several hundred servers to amplify its attacks”
The Dutch authorities also confirmed that an attack linked to this network took place during the recent NATO summit. All these attacks were successfully neutralized without significant disruptions to system operations.
As a result of Operation Eastwood, the infrastructure of the pro-Russian network was dismantled: over 100 computer systems worldwide, representing a significant portion of the central server infrastructure of the NoName057(16) group, were taken offline.
Law enforcement issued 7 arrest warrants, 6 of which were issued by Germany and 1 by Spain. Among those detained are 6 Russian citizens who are organizers of NoName057(16) activities and are located within the territory of the Russian Federation.
