Evanston Township High School officials announced late Monday that the school will resume summer school classes and other programs on Wednesday after a ransomware attack Sunday knocked out its online systems.
In addition to summer school classes camps and activities will operate as normally scheduled on Wednesday. All programs had been closed Monday and will remain closed on Tuesday.
School officials say the ransomware attack “affected critical systems needed to safely operate the building” and that those systems now have been restored “to a level that allows us to safely reopen the campus.”
Those systems included internet access, network systems, door access and public address announcements.
The district reports that it has tested emergency systems, including ones used in the event of fire or other emergencies and that “additional safety measures will remain in place for the forseeable future.
Phone systems at the school remain unavailable and students may not be able to access certain online tools, accounts or school resources.
Teachers and staff are working with limited access to email and other systems while rcovery efforts are underway.
The school says it does not know whether personal data was accessed in the breach, but is working with cybersecurity forensic experts to determine what information, if any, may have been accessed or acquired.
The school says it will not permit visitors to enter the campus “until otherwise communicated.”
More information about the cybersecurity incident is available on the ETHS website.
