The European Union’s age verification app for online platforms is technically ready and will be rolled out soon, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday.

Speaking at a press conference in Brussels alongside EU digital chief Henna Virkkunen, von der Leyen said the bloc is moving ahead with enforcing its digital regulations and holding online platforms accountable.

She said the app would provide parents, teachers and caregivers with a tool to help protect children online and stressed that companies failing to comply with child safety rules would face strict action.

Virkkunen said the EU will establish a coordination mechanism to ensure age verification systems work across member states under national frameworks.
