“The Club engaged specialist cyber security experts, the incident has been contained, and the Club continues to operate as normal. The investigation also confirmed that the Club’s gaming and membership management systems were not affected.
“The Club has notified the relevant authorities and is contacting individuals whose personal information was involved directly. The Club will not comment on claims made by the third party.”
Qilin listed the RSL club in a 22 October leak post. While the hackers have not disclosed the volume of data stolen, the group did publish 30 documents and passport scans, alongside passport applications that appear to belong to RSL staff.
As of the time of writing, publication of the data will take place within two days.
Who is Qilin?
The Qilin cyber extortion group operates under a ransomware-as-a-service model, with affiliates gaining access to its ransomware infrastructure in return for a cut of any ransom payments.
The group has claimed more than 2,400 victims since it first emerged in 2022, with more than 1,000 victims added to its darknet leak site this year alone.
Qilin’s ransomware is written in Golang and features multiple encryption modes, all of which are controlled by the operator. The group engages in double extortion – it demands payment for data to be decrypted, as well as for not releasing the data online.
The group’s most recent Australian victim was NSW-based Chadwick Switchboards, which was listed by the hackers this month.
Who is Bathurst RSL?
Located in the city of Bathurst in NSW, the Bathurst RSL recently amalgamated with the Portland RSL club.
The club is almost 100 years old and has more than 15,000 members.
