GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) — A family is raising concerns about school safety after a 15-year-old was arrested for pointing a gun at another student during summer school.
Gainesville Police Department officers say the teen was arrested on Wednesday at Gainesville High School (GHS). The family says it’s not the first time their son has been threatened.
Myra Jammer says her great-nephew, Kyrie, is still shaken after his former friend pointed a gun at him and his mother as summer school released at the high school.
The threats go back further. On Tuesday, his mom filed a police report about ongoing threats to kill him after people showed up outside his home. Kyrie’s mom made the school resource officer aware of the threats.
“My nephew was in the backseat going, ‘Mom, mom, go, go,” Jammer shared. “[His mother] said, ‘What do you mean go? Go for what?’ ‘He’s got a gun momma. He’s pointing a gun at us.’”
They came back, told the school resource officer, and the student was arrested; however, Jammer says the arrest isn’t enough. She wants more safety measures put in place at the school.
“I’m just tired of excuses,” Jammer said. “I see buildings and high-rises being built all over this place. I heard that the University of Florida is getting ready to get a new stadium. You mean to tell me, you guys can’t install metal detectors? We’re not trying to take away anybody’s guns. We just want our children to be safe.”

Gainesville police officers say there is a zero tolerance for any kind of weapon on a school campus.
“I’m sorry, you young men know that when you pick up a gun, it can terminate a life,” Jammer said. “You tell him you’re going to kill him. So, if you can use the word kill, but can’t spell it, but you can use it and act upon it, then you are acting like an adult. I’m so sorry, you should be charged as an adult.”
The student accused of pointing the gun at the other student was taken to the juvenile detention center. Gainesville police officers say the investigation is ongoing.
