Fasoo AI on Tuesday released a report titled “Intelligence Outside Control: The State of Shadow AI Use and Response in South Korean Organisations,” based on a survey of 151 corporate security managers on shadow AI use.
In the report, Fasoo AI stressed the urgent need for clear policies and guidelines on AI use and for providing safe internal AI tools to prevent security threats from shadow AI.
The report showed the most common approach to AI use was allowing it freely without separate rules, at 29.1 percent. That was followed by allowing only selected generative AI services, at 22.5 percent, and building and operating in-house AI, at 17.9 percent.
Organisations that said they block use in principle accounted for 14.6 percent. Respondents who said they currently use personal-account generative AI during work totaled 88.7 percent.
The company analysed this as meaning bans on generative AI in organisations are not preventing use through personal accounts. Even within the group that said they block use in principle, the shadow AI usage rate reached 77.3 percent.
The report also examined security issues stemming from shadow AI use. Only 19.2 percent of organisations said they identify and control employees’ use of AI through personal accounts. The top concern was internal core data being used to train third-party models, at 28.3 percent. Violations of regulations such as the Personal Information Protection Act and the GDPR, at 24.0 percent, and difficulty responding to incidents because usage history cannot be tracked, at 23.7 percent, were also cited as main concerns.
As measures to reduce shadow AI risks, respondents most often selected providing internal AI tools that employees can use safely, at 25.7 percent. That was followed by securing visibility to identify AI usage status, at 20.6 percent, establishing clear AI use policies and guidelines, at 18.9 percent, and technology to control sensitive information at the prompt input stage, at 17.7 percent.
Son Jong-gon (손종곤), executive director at Fasoo AI, said the survey shows shadow AI is hard to stop with bans alone. He said the key is to provide clear policies and safe alternatives and to secure visibility into AI usage status. He added that Fasoo AI will soon introduce an AI security platform that comprehensively manages various leakage paths and provides visibility across overall AI usage status.
