MINOT, N.D. (KMOT) – This week, we have reported on the ransomware attack last month on Minot’s Water Treatment Plant.
The March 14 incident did not compromise the city’s water, but forced staff to perform some operations manually for several hours.
We reached out to the FBI, who was informed by the city about this incident.
The FBI provided the following statement to Your News Leader:
“The FBI has been working with the City of Minot as they investigate this cyber attack. We applaud the City for acting quickly and allowing the FBI to work with the City’s IT professionals and our law enforcement partners on this investigation. Unfortunately, the most critical threats to infrastructure come from our networks.
“Federal, state and local partnerships are crucial in detecting, confronting, and dismantling cyber threats. Earlier this year, FBI Cyber Division launched Operation Winter Shield, which details the ten most impactful actions organizations can take to improve resilience against cyber intrusions. These recommendations were developed with domestic and international partners and draw on recent investigations to reflect adversary behavior and defensive gaps.
