The FBI has announced the seizure of nearly $2-million in cryptocurrency they say is related to a ransomware attack.
The bureau filed a civil complaint in the Northern District of Texas seeking the forfeiture of over $1.7 million worth of cryptocurrency that was seized by the Dallas office in April.
The FBI says the crypto that was originally worth over $2.4 million when it was seized April 15th and was connected to unlawful activity.
Investigators believe the proceeds and property derived from the activity, including money laundering and extortion, was related to a ransomware attack.
The investigation showed the cryptocurrency address is associated with members of the Chaos ransomware group known as “Hors.”
The FBI says this ransomware group has been tied to ransomware attacks against victims in North Texas and elsewhere.
