HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – Violent online predator groups are targeting teenagers across Connecticut, using manipulation and extortion to gain control over victims, according to FBI officials.
The groups, which include one called “764,” operate through gaming platforms and social media apps to befriend vulnerable teens before exploiting them, said PJ O’Brien, FBI Special Agent in Charge in New Haven.
“It’s a very horrendous intersection of domestic terrorism and crimes against children,” O’Brien said.
O’Brien described the groups as sadistic and nihilistic, with members who get pleasure from causing pain and believe life is worthless. He said tens of thousands of people belong to these networks nationwide.
“They’re specifically going after victims with weaknesses and looking to exploit that weakness,” O’Brien said.
The groups befriend teens on gaming or social media platforms, then convince them to create compromising content that can be used for blackmail.
“Taking a sexually explicit photograph or video including sexually explicit activity, and then once they have it they use it as leverage to exploit the victim to do more and more activities,” O’Brien said.
Once they have compromising material, the groups pressure victims to commit crimes such as calling in bomb threats or harming themselves. If victims refuse, the explicit images are released.
In Vernon, a 17-year-old girl was arrested in 2023 for calling several bomb threats at schools and other buildings. Police later determined she was a victim of child exploitation.
“There has been absolutely individuals who committed suicide based on encouragement from actors in this group,” said Detective Thomas Van Tasel of the Vernon Police Department.
Van Tasel said the groups often turn victims into new members to reduce pressure on themselves and establish their position within the organization.
“They infiltrate, they victimize someone, and then they encourage that person to extort others and victimize others. It takes the heat off them and allows them to establish themselves in these groups,” he said.
The FBI has seen a 500% increase in arrests related to these groups in the past year, though officials acknowledge the perpetrators can be difficult to catch due to encrypted messaging.
“What we see in Connecticut is consistent with what we see across the nation,” O’Brien said, confirming the activity is happening in the state.
The criminals often target teens playing popular games like Call of Duty, Minecraft and Roblox, using platforms like Discord and Telegram to communicate.
O’Brien urged parents to stay informed about their children’s online activities.
“Know what your children are doing. Have the difficult conversations about the threats that exist and make sure they’re aware,” he said.
